Motivation

The GNU/Linux platform benefits from an important dynamics in terms of open source projects in the musical domain. Although it currently does not have the same offer of professional musical software as what can be found on MacOS or Windows, we can expect GNU/Linux to become a platform of choice for computer music in the near future.

The LSM are an exceptional opportunity for the developers of audio and musical software to meet, exchange useful information, set-up collaborations and define future directions of work in this field. Moreover, we should take this opportunity to specify desirable evolutions of the Linux kernel to take into account of the specific needs of musical applications.

In addition to technical discussions, several musical projects will be presented during the session: jMax, OpenMusic, Ardour, Quasimodo, Elody, MidiShare, etc.

Sub-topics

  • Real-time architectures and inter-application communications
  • Audio and MIDI drivers, API for plug-ins
  • Langages for sound synthesis and music composition
  • Audio and Direct-to-Disk software, file system performance
